Temperatures may be hovering in the 90s from New York to L.A., but in (air-conditioned!) stores across the country, Fall clothes have arrived. And while the minimalist tendency is far from over (see "Man Up," below), there are also plenty of options for those who've secretly missed a bit of excess. Here, a brief recap of the season's top trends.

Puma to introduce urban outdoor fashion range
Puma is designing an urban fashion range of outdoor wear inspired by Formula One and the World Rally Championship (WRC), to be rolled out across Europe.
The launch, scheduled for February, marks the brand's first foray into performance clothing, a sector dominated by The North Face and Berghaus.
The range, named Ouninpohja, after the toughest stage of the WRC in Finland, will include jackets, trousers and footwear. In the UK, it will be stocked through an exclusive deal with all:sports.
Ouninpohja will be supported by a pan-European television campaign created by Gyro, as well as press ads, digital creative and in-store material.
Further promotional exposure will come from Puma's sponsorship of the Ford Rally team and of the WRC, which sees all officials and crew wear Puma clothing.
David Learmonth, marketing director for Puma UK & Ireland, said: 'This represents an extension of Puma's more traditional sportswear positioning. It combines performance with sport lifestyle, targeting the outerwear marketplace with added style.'

Outdoor clothing tipped for fashion boom
A new fashion is emerging that features both men's outdoor clothing and women's outdoor clothing, it has been suggested.
In a feature on the subject, outdoor magazine Grough said that the 'Wainwright look' - based on the sartorial approach of famous fellwalker and author Alfred Wainwright - is becoming the height of high street fashion.
The news provider quoted several papers on the subject, including the Daily Mail, which was told by director of menswear buying at Debenhams Paul Baldwin: "Men and women have fallen in love with the rugged outdoor image the hillclimbing clothing style portrays."
He added: "At one time, these specialist clothes would have been bought only by long-distance hillwalkers and mountaineers."
Alfred Wainwright is best known for his seven pictorial guides to the fells, which were written in the 1950s and 60s.
Illustrated by his own hand, the guides gained a cult following among walkers and climbing all 214 'Wainwrights' has become a popular challenge.
He also devised the Coast-to-Coast Walk that crosses England from St Bees Head in Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay in North Yorkshire.

'Wainwright chic' strides from the hills to the catwalk
Outdoor wear suited to long country hikes is being hailed as the high street's next big thing By Andrew Johnson
Millions follow, literally, in his footsteps. They even follow his advice on what to wear. But while Alfred Wainwright – the author of seven revered walking guides to the Lake District – was undoubtedly a fixture on the national landscape, fashion was never one of his strong points.
Nevertheless, high-street retailers, never slow to latch on to a marketing opportunity, are touting Wainwright chic – a mash-up of Compo from Last of the Summer Wine and Kate Moss – as the next big thing.
Outdoor wear is in, and Wainwright is being credited with boosting the trend.
Before anyone gets too carried away, the people wearing Sergio Rossi's hiking boots or Dolce & Gabbana plaid shirts won't be going anywhere near a mountain, fell or moor. Instead they'll be braving the dangers of windswept streets, surviving the pitfalls of trendy nightclubs and scaling the peaks of their office block front steps.
At a push they might, like Moss, explore the various stages of a music festival. But it is Moss and co who are said to be taking their cues from the stylings of the man who died 19 years ago at the age of 84.
Debenhams says sales of its chunky walking socks are up 15 per cent; walking trousers up 148 per cent; flat caps up by 180 per cent; walking boots by 30 per cent and Fair Isle knits by 25 per cent over the past two years.
"We're calling it Wainwright chic," its director of menswear, Paul Baldwin, said. "At one time, these specialist clothes would have been bought only by long-distance hill walkers. Now, however, you're more likely to see them worn on the streets of Kensington and Chelsea than Scafell or Grisedale Pike."
Robert Johnston, associate editor of the men's fashion magazine GQ, said the trend probably had more to do with catwalks than fell walking. "For autumn/winter next season it's going to be hiking boots and chunky knits and plaid shirts. It's sexy and it's masculine, and as well as protecting us from the weather it gives a sense of comfort in the economic climate – we're dreaming of the great outdoors. Buying less but of better quality is the rule of this economic climate."
Dr Eike Wenzel of the German Institute of Trends and Futurology will be presenting research today on the fashion for outdoor clothing in urban areas at the Outdoor Trade Fair in Friedrichshafen in Germany. He said part of the reason for the trend was a shift in attitude towards nature over the past decade.
"We found that people no longer love business suits," he said. "We have noticed that in many urban areas – London, Berlin, Oslo – the middle classes and upper managers are riding bikes to their offices wearing chic outdoor clothes. So we have a funny picture of people wearing their outdoor clothing and doing jobs where they earn a lot of money.
"We want to get closer to nature and we are identifying more with nature, perhaps because of awareness of climate change."

Stripes for Summer: women's fashion trend
Amongst the plethora of fashion trends for Summer 2010 you'll find the season's new take on military fashion. While heavily influenced by 20th Century army and air force styling, nautical influenced pieces have hardly got a look in. And I'm afraid I'm not here to change that. But for those fashioniser who are nautically inclined, this Summer still has something in store. Don't think of it as a nautical military trend, however. Rather, it's the navy and white colour palette, worn as dominant stripes.
The Style
Note that I didn't say bold stripes, but dominant stripes. While navy and white stripes are a must for the look, the real key to Summer's take on nautical stripes is that they dominate the outfit. While they do so in the above look easily (though the plum Doc Martens still seem somewhat heavy), in other outfits it's about drawing attention to the stripes above all else in the outfit.
As an illustration of the point be sure to look at the inspiration pictures below; while most looks rely on bold stripes, you'll see that the trend is just as effective when the stripes are thin. Hence for Summer 2010 look for dominant stripes, not necessarily bold ones.

The Pieces To Wear
Don't think of this Summer stripes just as a clothing trend: you can work them into any part of an outfit (just not all at once, please). As you'll see in the inspiration gallery stripes can dominate an outfit in everything from hats to killer mini-dresses.
To Nautical Or Not To Nautical?
While Summer's navy and white striped fashion trend isn't a true take on navy inspired fashion, it's likely to appeal to those who are in to the nautical aesthetic. If that's you and you're after some inspiration look to Anja Rubik's sailor inspiration from the June 2010 issue of Vogue Korea. The shoot utilises the season's stripe trend in the form of a dominant blazer, but takes the nautical motifs to far less subtle proportions.
Layering
The natural inclination for layering nautical pieces in an outfit is to do so with complimentary colours (read 'navy and white'). And I can't fault that logic. It's the easy option. But may I offer up one piece of inspiration that differs from the safe? Nataliya Piro in Cosmopolitan magazine mixing (admittedly non-dominant) stripes with floral prints. The stripes don't dominate, but in a crowded room the look certainly will.
If you do pair stripes with a contrasting / clashing prints, please be sure to share them on Fashionising.com's Facebook page or in the comments below - I'd love to see them.
